Hello,
Sorry for the long delay between my last post; we are launching a new website shortly and I have been really focused on the transition.
We had our annual student-staff basketball game this afternoon. After the "miracle in the DSMS gym" last year, students returned to their winning ways, 58-56. It was a battle from start to finish but the students just proved to be too tough in the end.
We had a great time and it really was a nice culmination to our "Hoops for Heart" program. I know my cardiovascular system got a very strong workout...thank goodness for the oxygen on the bench! :)
Have a great February vacation!
Respectfully,
Frederick

DSMS Head Custodian
Hello folks,
Our Head Custodian, Buddy Stevens, is retiring. His last day is today, Friday, September 18. We are thrilled for Buddy personally as he will get a chance to enjoy his family and hopefully lots of fishing! For us, it is an incalculable loss as Buddy set the highest standards for both his work and personal interactions. I know I speak on behalf of the entire DSMS community when I state that we are all grateful to have known and worked with Buddy. Best of luck on a long and pleasant retirement, Buddy!
I am happy to announce that Mr. James Burke has been appointed the new DSMS Head Custodian. James comes to us from Pine Hill, where he has served as the night shift supervisor. James brings over sixteen years of general maintenance experience with him and we are very excited about his appointment. The process included many inside and outside candidates, was very competitive and made for a difficult decision. Please make sure to say hello and introduce yourself to Jim when you have a chance to meet him.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Frederick

The Importance of Restful Sleep
Hello folks,
It may seem obvious, it certainly did to me, but getting a good night sleep is crucial for living a healthy and productive life. I have always been a person who is very structured about my sleep habits. Looking back, my main focus to sleep was on quantity...when quality is really equally important. It wasn't until my wife had told me a thousand times that I was snoring (terribly) that I finally looked into the quality of my sleep.
A couple of weeks ago, I attended an overnight sleep study. Long story, short: I have a very severe, even potentially life threatening, case of sleep apnea. The good news is that it is treatable with a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)machine that I can wear at night. Basically the machine continuously pushes oxygen through my airways to make sure that the airways do not collapse (the source of both snoring and oxygen deprivation). I started the machine last week and already feel better...as does my wife.
For me, it is just another reminder of how easy it can be to take your health for granted. Make sure you listen to your loved ones if you are being told you are snoring very badly. That snoring could be more than a tremendous annoyance for you and your partner...it could be a sign that your body is not getting the oxygen it needs!
I am now focusing on getting my body back to 100%. This means that I have decided to stop playing football this season and focus on more cardiovascular exercise and weight loss. Make sure you take the time to take care of yourself as well!
Sincerely,
Frederick

The President's Address- Tuesday, September 8
Dear DSMS Parents and Guardians:
President Obama is set to address students across the United States at noon time today, September 8, 2009 at noon time. The noon time start (originally had been planned for 1:00), complicates our ability to transmit the program to all students.
We also have half of our students in grade 7 attending a field trip today. As a result, we are not going to be airing the address live during instructional time today. Rather we are encouraging parents to view the President's address with their children at home. CSPAN is airing the broadcast and it is our hope that parents will take the opportunity to see the presentation with their children as a validation of the importance of goal setting and education.
Best,
Frederick

Opening Day Success!
Hello,
We are up and running at the Dover Sherborn Middle School! I am excited to report that we had a smooth and successful opening to school today. Special thanks to Mr. Moran for all of his hard work at scheduling and for Katey Lonergan and Sharon Tehan's organizational wonders in the main office.
I will be making sure to keep an eye out for exciting school opening activities to take pictures or film of for the blog. Stay tuned.
Best,
Frederick

Seussical- The Musical
Hello,
I just want to put in a strong plug for everyone to try to go see the Dover-Sherborn Summer Drama Program production of "Seussical- The Musical". It is being held at the Sherborn Community Center and is running from Wednesday, August 26 through Saturday, August 29 at 7:30pm. Tickets are almost sold out; so act quickly and get tickets while you can!
I saw the opening night performance last night and was blown away by the quality of singing and overall production value. It felt like I was being treated to a Broadway show in Sherborn!
Act fast- you won't regret it!
Sincerely,
Frederick

Summer Mailings -Out This Week!
Hello,
All of the schedules are being mailed out this week (08-17-09). Students, parents and teachers can all expect to receive their schedules by the end of the week. The building will be available to students and parents for touring next week (08-24). If you do come, please stop by to introduce yourselves to me!
I will be posting my "How to open a locker" video on this blog shortly- stay tuned sixth graders!
Summer has flown by fast! One neat personal update: I have exercised my player option to join another football team. I am now playing with the Central Mass Fury; we are a team centered out of Leicester, Massachusetts. We play most of our games at 4:00 on the Leicester Community Field, right off of route 9. I am number 65; check out our website at: www.massfury.net
See you soon!
Respectfully,
Frederick
